open window
the city breeze blows in
thump thump my heart pounds in
the flimsy shirt
white cotton frilled
the rise and fall
shudders
your window is up there
third floor
slightly ajar
your curtains flutter
gently licking brickwork
in and out
tick tick tick
the left hand light flashes
loading stop only
my minutes are nearly up
but i chance it
a few more
whose to know?
the mirror reflects the past
when we danced up the steps to
delight
laughter echoing down the street
late one night
not so long ago
or so it seems
the rush of cars screech by and wake me
the memories dispersed by the police car pulling up behind me
a last glance upwards
there is to be no glimpse of you
a sigh surfaces with tears
as i pull away.
My take on this weeks magpie tales no. 88 from Tess at Willow Manor

ReplyDeletewow kay! i just wrote a piece for this prompt and there's an exchange between someone up there and someone down below also. i like that yours opens out more fully than mine. steven
ReplyDeletealot going on in your scene...the long for what once was for sure...amid a myriad of details that put us right there to feel it...nicely played...

Oh, yes. This was good. You took it inside the building.. I loved that!
The yearning is palpable. Nicely done!
ReplyDelete'not long ago, or so it seems' GOT me. Lovely writing.
ReplyDeletethere is such a memory in the city, when you said the echoing of laughter, it was very similar to what the photo did to me. thank you for your comment on my post - it's funny, since i live in portland it's not a 'city' like NYC and there is so much of a hybridization between city and country (see my house post today on ecogrrl.com), and the country is so close as well. it's nothing like southern england of course, i was madly in love with kent when i was there last november...yet at the same time, my trip to The Goods Shed in canterbury reminded me of home...it's funny, i am in love with my city but i could easily see myself in the quiet expanse of land as well - dating a farmer did that to me...but fortunately there are so many choices in oregon where the city and the country and the sea and the mountains are all within a couple of hours. lovely ;)
ReplyDeleteso many thanks for all your encouraging comments...so glad i found tess and her magpies its given me something to focus while times are tough. xx
ReplyDeleteWow, Kay. This is one of the most powerful responses to this week's Magpie for me. I was there, feeling it. I'm not kidding - you caught me right in the middle of it. Thank you for sharing this. xx
ReplyDeleteI liked this most! thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteKay, I feel that I'm not at all qualified to comment on your posts, but I just want to say that I find your writing enchanting, it takes me to that place and point in time exactly.
